Cox Farms

Update: The public hearing was yesterday, and the Board of Supervisors voted last night to adopt the amendment in line with staff recommendations. It goes into effect July 1, so we'll be getting to work on our Administrative Permit application, and we'll see you this fall! Thank you for your support and outreach!

TL/DR: Cox Farms needs YOUR HELP. Show your support by sending a quick email to the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors by Tuesday, June 22.

(Bear with us- We know this is long and boring, but we urgently need your help!)

Do YOU love Cox Farms? We cherish being your local tradition, and we hope to continue for generations to come. On Tuesday, June 22, Fairfax County Board of Supervisors is holding a public hearing on a proposed Zoning Ordinance amendment regarding Agritourism. If you support us, please consider contacting the Board to express your support for this amendment in accordance with Zoning Administration staff recommendations as presented in the June 22nd Board Package (link below). The staff recommendations clarify the acreage tier system and ensure that family gatherings, birthday parties, and other events can remain part of our normal operations, and we ask for your support of these provisions. Please submit your written testimony by email to ClerktotheBOS@fairfaxcounty.gov.

While this amendment would subject Cox Farms to additional oversight and administrative requirements, we support it because it establishes consistent standards for regulation of agritourism activities, which are allowed by right under state law. The Planning Commission proposed revisions to the amendment that could have devastating consequences for the future of our Fall Festival, and ultimately, for the survival of our farm. If you have enjoyed the Fall Festival or Fields of Fear, or even our Corner Market’s Smokin’ Saturday events during the Spring & Summer, and if you want these activities to be available for future generations to enjoy, please contact the Board of Supervisors and encourage them to adopt the Agritourism amendment with staff’s recommendations, which clarify the acreage tier system and ensure that family gatherings, birthday parties, and other events can remain part of our normal operations.

You can read more about the amendment here: www.fairfaxcounty.gov/planning-development/zoning-ordinance/agritourism

I'm reading this over and trying to compose a concise statement that *accurately* reflects what you're after, and I could use a hand. Please feel free to edit this to make it work: "Please vote FOR the proposed zoning amendment for Argictourism in accordance with Zoning Administration staff recommendations as presented in the June 22nd Board Package." Does that do the trick, or does it need to be more explicit? Of course, this would be accompanied by personal comments about the role of Cox Farm in keeping alive the connection between the agricultural heritage of Fairfax County and its residents, young and old.

Cox Farms perhaps starting a petition is the way to go? Have you all also written a letter or contacted them expressing your concerns? Maybe a rep from Cox could speak at the hearing? We wanna make sure you can keep doing what you do! You have my support!

I'm not local, but I follow your page and enjoy hearing about your farm. I would visit if I were closer. I'm wondering if I could also write in, or does it need to be local people only? And if I can, does anyone have a email template that I could just reword a bit to make it my own? Sometimes I'm quite eloquent, and sometimes I can't put two words together properly. I fear right now it's the latter.

Just emailed! I agree that this should be a little more concise in order for more people to support it. I recommend a summary with the following information. Purpose: Express your support for this amendment in accordance with Zoning Administration staff recommendations as presented in the June 22nd Board Package. Feel free to add that you support Cox Farms and want to see it continue and thrive in our community. Feel free to share personal stories. Email address: ClerktotheBOS@fairfaxcounty.gov We are routing for you Cox Farms!!

Email sent! You guys are amazing and I can’t wait to be back scaring people on the hayride this fall!

Dana

You might recall when I had to go before the county Zoning Board of Review to get a special permit to keep our pet pig Burger. One of my neighbors had complained, so I got all the dozen or so adjacent neighbors to sign a petition in favor of Burger, and also did an online petition that garnered another 1,500 signatures. I’m sure the community will come out with a big swell of support for you too, and it should help! 🐷 ❤️

This is what you get back

Hey Cox Farms could you write a template letter people could modify if they want amd include the email where you want it sent in the body of the post? This way all your followers have to do is copy and paste in their email. 1. More people will do it because you’ve done the work for them and 2. It’ll written in the precise way you need it to so as to get the vote you need. And 3. If we copy and paste your post to our walls our friends can copy and paste to their emails and walls and so on. Give us a title. Give us a quick template message. Tell us where to send it. Love you guys!!!

Email sent, hope it helps! 🙏

I like the idea of a template too.

Shannon McCoy posted the following above: Dear Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, Please vote FOR the proposed zoning amendment for Argictourism in accordance with Zoning Administration staff recommendations as presented in the June 22nd Board Package. Cox Farms and all that they do is a vital part of the community and should be protected. Thank you for considering this proposal. Sincerely,
